We often use one istead of repeating a noun.
  • My new car is smaller than my old one.

We only us a/an with one if there is an adjective.

  • I'm looking for a shirt. I want a yellow one.

We can use one after the demonstrative adjectives this and that.

  • Which T-shirt do you prefer? This one or that one.

We use which one(s) in questions.

  • I like the blue best. Which one do you prefer?
